India’s cement production to touch 320 million tonnes
Currently, India is the world"s second largest cement producing country in the world after China. India currently produces almost 300 million tonnes of cement annually. India has over 135 large and 365 mini cement plants.

According to Cement Manufacturers Association (CMA) the large cement plants together employs almost 120,000 people. The Indian cement production is projected to reach somewhere between 315-320 million tonnes by FY 2012 end, and is further projected to reach 550 million tonnes by 2020 end.

According to N.A Viswanathan (Secretary General), CMA, “The target was 290 million tonne by the end of this year, which we have already achieved. So, we expect the capacity to increase up to 320 million tonne by the year end."

He further added that, to add one million capacity almost Rs. 500 crore is required. Over the past five years, India is adding approximately 40 million tonnes of capacity every year. He further said that, “The current consumption is almost 80 per cent of the capacity. The demand is expected to grow at 8-9 per cent this year."
