With the new position, Harish would be responsible for taking care for all markets, driving speed to market behind further simplification and efficiency. The position of COO is created in order to focus on tapping opportunity in emerging markets.
Harish Manwani, is first Indian to be assigned to such high position in the company. Prior to him, list if Indians included former HUL Chairpersons T Thomas, Ashok Ganguly, K B Dadiseth and Vindi Banga, howver, they were appointed as the members of the Unilever Executive Committee (UEx).
Talking about Manwani's profile, he joined Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL), now Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL), in 1976 and proceeded to become a board member of the company in 1995. Then, he was positioned as the director for Personal Products business. Later, in 2004, he was promoted as the President and CEO of the Home and Personal Care North America business group, and in April, 2005, joined the Unilever Executive as President, Asia Africa.
Currently, with his position of COO of the company, Manwani is the President, Asia Africa, Central and Eastern Europe. Besides, he is also working as the non-executive chairman of HUL and holds the position of member of the Executive Board of the Indian School of Business.
Commenting on the new re-organisation, Chief Executive Officer Paul Polman said: "Unilever now has over half its turnover in the emerging markets, where over the last 10 years; growth has been close to double digits. We have an opportunity to better support this footprint of the business, to keep our strong momentum, with a more globally aligned country and category organisation."
Following the implementation of the new structure, Dave Lewis, currently President, Americas, will be appointed as President, Personal Care, consisting of skin, deodorants, oral and hair.
