The government is going to present the Union budget on March 16, 2012. This will be followed by the Economic Survey on March 15 and the Railway Budget on March 14, as per certain media reports.
The dates scheduled are against the trend of general budget being presented on the last day of February every year. The shift in the schedule of the budget comes in line with the model code of conduct in force for elections. The code prevents governments from giving out sops to voters, remains operational till the process of elections is completed.
This move by the government comes in the backdrop of crucial elections in five states, which are scheduled to start by the end of this month.
Meanwhile, the elections are to be held in five states namely Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa.
As per the schedule worked out by the Election Commission, last polling would take place on 3rd March in Goa and counting of votes will begin on 4th March, post which Budget would be presented.
