Post market: Indian markets end the day on a flat note Analysis for Jan 23, 2012

The Indian markets ended on a flat note today with the BSE Sensex ending slightly in green while the NSE Nifty ended slightly in the red. The negative overhang of poor results of Reliance Industries limited were visible today and the Oil & Gas index lost 138.55 points. The results of L & T were reasonable good and this supported the market sentiments. Foreign Institutional Investors continued to provide strong support to Indian markets today also. The FIIs were net buyers in Indian equity markets today with net investments of Rs 997.30 crore.

The BSE SENSEX closed at 16751.73 up by 12.72 points or 0.08 % and the NSE Nifty closed at 5046.25 down -2.35 points or -0.05 %. The BSE MIDCAP closed at 5683.2 up by 3.13 points or 0.06 % while the BSE SMLCAP closed at 6294.01 up by 16.74 points or by 0.27 %.The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 16784 and intraday low of 16659.32 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 5059.55 and intraday low of 5021.35.

The top gainers at the BSE Sensex were Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 1162.55,+5.77%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 352.30,+3.03%), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 281.05,+2.69%), DLF Ltd. (Rs. 219.30,+2.50%) and ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 857.80,+1.80%).

The top losers at the BSE Sensex were Sterlite Industries (India) Ltd. (Rs. 107.80,-5.36%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 137.35,-4.29%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 1870.45,-4.11%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 771.00,-2.82%) and Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 334.40,-2.73%) .

The top gainers of the NSE Nifty were Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 1160.65,+5.18%), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 282.30,+3.12%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 352.15,+2.86%), DLF Ltd. (Rs. 219.30,+2.48%) and ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 856.75,+1.70%) .

The top losers of the NSE Nifty were Sterlite Industries (India) Ltd. (Rs. 107.90,-5.39%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 137.35,-4.35%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 1875.15,-3.67%), Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (Rs. 477.30,-3.44%) and Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 335.00,-2.84%).

The BSE_FMCG index closed at 4068.46 up by 33.39 points or by 0.83%. Godrej Consumer Products Ltd. (Rs. 418.55,+3.95%), Colgate-Palmolive (India) Ltd. (Rs. 984.95,+2.53%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 204.25,+1.44%) and Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 395.10,+1.10%) were the top gainers.

The BSE Realty index closed at 1721.76 up by 13.97 points or by 0.82%. Parsvnath Developers Ltd. (Rs. 58.70,+2.80%), DLF Ltd. (Rs. 219.30,+2.50%), Prestige Estates Projects Ltd. (Rs. 77.55,+1.57%), Anant Raj Industries Ltd. (Rs. 58.35,+0.34%) and Godrej Industries Ltd. (Rs. 647.95,+0.31%) were the top gainers.

The BSE Metal index closed at 10966.9 down by -230.74 points or -2.06%. Sterlite Industries (India) Ltd. (Rs. 107.80,-5.36%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 137.35,-4.29%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 334.40,-2.73%), JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 632.55,-2.38%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 426.70,-2.27%) were the top losers.

The BSE Oil&Gas index was at 8186.47 down by -138.55 points or by -1.66%. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 542.05,-3.34%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 771.00,-2.82%), Gujarat State Petronet Ltd. (Rs. 79.65,-1.61%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 369.95,-0.83%) and Cairn India Ltd. (Rs. 345.10,-0.23%) were the top losers.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was not so strong. On BSE out of total 2961 shares traded, 1478 shares advanced while 1351 shares declined and 132 remained unchanged.
