The BSE Sensex emerged as the biggest gainer in Asia today after foreign investors once again upheld the Indian markets. Net investments by FIIs in Indian equity markets today were Rs 645.00 crore. India"s HSBC PMI for January increased to 57.5 in January from 54.2 in December. This is an indication of the fastest pace of growth in manufacturing in the past eight months. However, this also means that the Reserve Bank of India may somewhat hesitate in cutting down interest rates due to fears about inflation. The good sales data of automobile companies also gave a lift to market sentiments.

The BSE SENSEX closed at 17300.58 up by 107.03 points or 0.62 % and the NSE Nifty closed at 5235.7 up by 36.45 points or 0.7 %. The BSE MIDCAP closed at 5937.19 up by 65.49 points or by 1.12 %. while the BSE SMLCAP closed at 6573.58 up by 110.28 points or 1.71 %. The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 17327.21 and intraday low of 17061.55 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 5244.6 and intraday low of 5159.

The top gainers at the BSE Sensex were Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 577.15,+6.43%), Tata Power Company Ltd. (Rs. 110.10,+6.02%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 152.85,+4.23%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 469.55,+4.11%) and Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 1928.25,+3.45%) .

The top losers at the BSE Sensex were Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 317.15,-2.61%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 888.20,-1.53%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 272.20,-1.32%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 687.80,-1.28%) and Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 361.10,-1.04%).

The top gainers at the NSE Nifty were Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 576.10,+6.34%), Tata Power Company Ltd. (Rs. 110.15,+6.02%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 153.20,+4.50%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 470.95,+4.47%) and Jaiprakash Associates Ltd. (Rs. 72.80,+4.22%).

The top losers at the NSE Nifty pack were Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 317.00,-3.12%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 560.00,-2.12%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 889.90,-1.36%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 272.45,-1.30%) and Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 688.90,-1.28%).

The gains today were led by metal and consumer goods indices. The BSE Metal index was at 11839.91 up by 341.05 points or 2.97%. Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 577.15,+6.43%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 152.85,+4.23%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 469.55,+4.11%), NMDC Ltd. (Rs. 185.15,+3.52%), Sterlite Industries (India) Ltd. (Rs. 119.30,+3.16%) were the major gainers.

The BSE_CGS index was at 10095.89 up by 231.17 points or 2.34%. Crompton Greaves Ltd. (Rs. 143.95,+8.07%), Punj Lloyd Ltd. (Rs. 55.95,+5.97%), Suzlon Energy Ltd. (Rs. 29.55,+5.54%), Lakshmi Machine Works Ltd. (Rs. 1675.70,+5.12%), Alstom Projects India Ltd. (Rs. 349.55,+3.75%) were the major gainers.

The BSE_CDS index was at 5829.21 down by 77.18 points or 1.31%. Titan Industries Ltd. (Rs. 196.85,-2.69%), TTK Prestige Ltd. (Rs. 2326.00,-1.95%), Videocon Industries Ltd. (Rs. 173.55,-0.52%), Gitanjali Gems Ltd. (Rs. 309.15,-0.39%), Blue Star Ltd. (Rs. 170.00,-0.38%) were the major losers.

The BSE_PSU index was at 7346 down by 10.68 points or 0.15%. Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 271.75,-5.81%), Jammu & Kashmir Bank Ltd. (Rs. 807.00,-2.80%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 317.15,-2.61%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 287.55,-2.41%), Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (Rs. 30.10,-2.11%) were the major losers.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was reasonably strong. On BSE out of the 3018 shares traded, 1902 shares advanced while 1001 shares declined and 115 remained unchanged.
