Senior citizens seek 50% concession in Railway Budget 2012-13

Senior citizens seek 50% concession in Budget 2012-13
Amidst the scenario where Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi is busy seeking funds for the development of railways, the elderly people have put forward the proposal of introducing 50 per cent concession in train travel for all senior citizens, said the media reports.

The proposal is made by a retired government employees association. It seeks for provision of equal concession for both male and female senior citizens.

Currently, the male senior citizens are provided 30 per cent concession, while 50 per cent concession is provided to female senior citizens in train travel.

Besides, the association has also asked for a separate counter for the senior citizens in all major railway stations in the state including Berhampur. The demand comes at the backdrop of the trouble faced by the citizen while standing in long queues to get the tickets.

The concerns for the railway travel by the senior citizens remained subdued in the last year's budget. Budget 2011-12 only announced the reduction in age for concession under senior citizen category from 60 to 58 in case of female passengers.
