Markets end lower on special Diwali Muhurat trading
Muhurat trading to mark the beginning of Samvat 2069 (Hindu New Year), ended lower, with the Sensex shedding 51 points, while the Nifty ended the day lower by 16.75 points.

Muhurat trading was conducted for 75 minutes today, beginning from 3.45 pm and ending at 5 pm.

Muhurat trading is a centuries old tradition and buying on this day is considered as auspicious.

Among the stocks that gained ground in the special trade today were Bharti Airtel, Hindalco, Tata Steel and Cipla. Stocks that lost ground in trade were Jaiprakash Associates, UltraTech Cement, DLF and Grasim.

United Spirits which had rallied sharply on Monday following the acquisition by Diageo lost ground in trade today. The stock was down more than 1.61%.

Among the mid cap stocks that fell were HDIL, Andhra Bank, Tech Mahindra and Mphasis.

Today's trade was characterised by low volumes as there was generally an absence of institutions, both domestic and foreign institutional investors.
