RBI employees call nation-wide strike on January 1

United Forum of RBI Officers and Employees has called a one-day nation-wide strike on January 1, 2013 to protest the decision of management of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to close currency notes and coins issue counters from new-year.

General Secretary of the All India Reserve Bank Employees Association Samir Ghosh said that the central bank was mandated by the RBI Act 1934 to manage, issue and exchange of currency notes and coins throughout the country and despite that, it has decided to shut down 200 counters in various cities.

Ghosh said shutting down these counters would leave many employees work-less.
