Railway Budget 2013: Highlights
Railway minister, Pawan Bansal, presented his maiden Railway Budget, which was also the First Railway Budget in 17 years by a Congress Railway Minister. Here are the highlights from the speech of the Railway Minister:

1) Rail losses estimated at Rs 24,600 crores for 2012-2013 vs Rs 22,500 crores in 2012-2013

2) No hike in passenger fares

3) 12th Plan Rail market borrowing at Rs 1.2 lakh crores

4) Raising Rs 95,000 crores over next 4 years

5) Plans to allow e-ticketing via mobile phones

6) Next generation e-ticketing system in place will allow 7200 tickets per minute

7) Wheelchairs and escalators to be made to make stations and trains friendlier for the differently-abled

8) Gross Budgetary support at Rs 1.94 crores for 2013 budget

9) 1.5 lakh vacancies to be filled up

10) Staff construction quarters to be facilitated

11) Hostel facilities for single women employees

12) Institute of Railway Financial Management to come up in Secunderabad

13) Fund balances need to be built to Rs 30,000 crores

14) Rs 4000 crores allocated for coal mine collectivity

15) Targets 4500 crores from sale of scrap

16) Freight income expected at for FY 13 target Rs 89976 crores

17) Railways' freight loading traffic scaled down by 100 million tonnes

18) 26 new passenger trains launched
