Military-issued security concerns affect petroleum exploration on eastern blocks

Energy development in India is being marred by growing security concerns in India. This is evident from the fact that exploration on 39 blocks, offshore India has been getting delayed for long time now, owing to the restrictions imposed by Defense Ministry, oil and gas ministry told media.

The affected blocks are located in the eastern part of India. These are about 22 in the Krishna-Godavari basin, 9 in the Mahanadi-Northeast Coast basin, 3 in the Cauvery basin and 2 in the Prahnita-Godavari basin.

Moreover, two other affected blocks are off western India in the Gujarat-Saurashtra basin and another block is located in the Andaman Islands.

As per a report submitted in the lower house of the Indian parliament, Minister of state for petroleum and natural gas, Panabaaka Lakshmi stated that the defense ministry has listed strategic and security-related considerations.

These enlisted concerns, thus limited the activity on petroleum exploration licenses awarded under various bidding rounds.
