In line with its efforts to supplement declining output, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has spudded its first exploration well in more than 5-year period on the KG-D6 block.

RIL's minority partner in the Krishna Godavari basin, Niko Resources said that the MJ-1 exploration well on the Dhirubhai-1 and 3 gas fields in the KG-D6 block "was spud in early March and is drilling ahead".

The new well is targeting a Mesozoic synrift clastic reservoir, which is similar to the producing MA oil and gas field in the same block.

Output from Dhirubhai-1 and 3 fields have seen a sharp decline from 53-54 million cubic metre per day achieved in March, 2010 to about 12 mscmd this month. Together with less than 6 mscmd output from MA oilfield in the same block, KG-D6 is currently producing approximately 17 mscmd, sources said.
