Mamata raises tax on cigarettes to fund Saradha bailout
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday decided to raise the taxes on cigarettes by 10 per cent, hoping to garner at least Rs 150 crore for the relief fund being set up for the depositors of Saradha Group.

"I am sorry but I have to do this," Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, who plans a Rs 500 crore relief fund for the depositors.

The statement came a day after the letter from Saradha Group CMD Sudipta Sen to CBI named two TMC members of Parliament - Kunal Ghosh and Srinjoy Bose - embarrassing Mamata Banerjee's government.

Kunal Ghosh had recently resigned as the CEO of Saradha Media Group, while Bose is an editor of a Bengali daily. When asked about the two leaders, Mamata Banerjee said "One journalist is being targetted... There are so many journalists. There is no use of identifying one channel and one newspaper. If any TMC MP has committed an offence, the law will take its own course."
