Kumar Mangalam Birla, the chairman of Aditya Birla Group, has written a letter to the Department of Telecom (DoT) expressing his displeasure over delay in issue of licences to his group firm Idea Cellular and asking for an urgent redressal.
Birla said that Idea had won spectrum through an auction in November 2012 but is still awaiting the licences which is impacting the confidence of investors and lenders. The letter also pointed that some other operators who also won spectrum in November 2012 have already received licences.
Idea, the country's third largest telecom firm, paid Rs 2,031 crore for spectrum across seven zones as they were quashed by Supreme Court in the aftermath of 2G scam.
Birla has mentioned that the 3-G intra-circle roaming (ICR) issue was separately being handled. Idea has specifically requested DoT to keep clause 6 of the Letter of Intent (LoI) in relation to 3G ICR, in abeyance, Birla has said in his communication.
It also asked DoT to approve commercial use of 3G spectrum for the Punjab service area as the company made huge investments.
