Car sales fall for ninth straight month: SIAM

According to PTI, domestic passenger car sales slipped for the ninth month on the trot in July 2013 as high interest rates and rising fuel costs deter purchases, underscoring the deepening slowdown in Asia's third biggest economy.

Domestic passenger car sales fell by 7.4 per cent to 131,163 units in July 2013 from the same month a year ago, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed.

In July 2012, Indian automobile makers had sold 141,646 units of passenger cars in the domestic market.

Sales of motor cycles fell by 1.52 per cent to 809,312 units in July 2013, compared to 821,821 units in the same month a year ago.

Two-wheeler sales fell by 0.06 per cent to 11,31,992 units in July 2013 from 11,32,696 units in the year ago month.

Commercial vehicle sales fell by 14.93 per cent to 55,301 units in July 2013 from 65,008 units in the same month a year ago.

Total sales of vehicles across categories fell by 2.08 per cent to 14,15,102 units in July 2013 from 14,45,112 units in the same month last year.
