Sensex tad lower; oil & gas, banking stocks drag Analysis for Oct 10, 2013

The 30-share benchmark index slipped in red during the late morning trading session ahead of Q2 earning session to start from Friday. The Sensex was down 77 points led by selling pressure in index heavyweights including HDFC Bank, Tata Power, ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries, BHEL and Sun Pharma among others.

At 11:23AM BSE SENSEX was at 20171.53, down by 77.73 points or by 0.38 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 5985.8, down by 21.65 points or by 0.36 per cent.

The BSE Sensex touched an intraday high of 20323.77 and an intraday low of 20135.91, while the NSE Nifty touched an intraday high of 6031.8 and an intraday low of 5979.8.

The BSE MIDCAP was at 5847.51 up by 30.79 points or by 0.53 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP was at 5677.62 up by 25.91 points or by 0.46 per cent.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Sesa Sterlite Ltd. (Rs. 187.40,+1.68%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 307.35,+1.47%), Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 251.35,+1.09%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 860.55,+1.06%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 1412.25,+0.99%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 637.00,-1.90%), Tata Power Company Ltd. (Rs. 84.35,-1.75%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 937.65,-1.27%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 851.50,-1.10%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 638.80,-0.90%), among others.

In BSE, BSE Metal index was at 8887.09 up by 79.58 points or by 0.9%. NMDC Ltd. (Rs. 129.50,+1.85%), Sesa Sterlite Ltd. (Rs. 187.40,+1.68%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 307.35,+1.47%), Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 251.35,+1.09%), Steel Authority of India (SAIL) Ltd. (Rs. 58.25,+1.04%),.

In BSE, BSE Oil&Gas index was at 8452.68 down by -50.05 points or by -0.59%. Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 851.50,-1.10%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 190.15,-0.60%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 333.55,-0.42%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 272.55,-0.24%), Cairn India Ltd. (Rs. 322.55,-0.14%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total 2066 shares traded 1144 shares advanced, 799 shares declined and 123 remained unchanged.

On the global front, Asian peers executed mixed cues to the D-street led by Shanghai Composite and Hang Seng down by 0.82 and 0.84 per cent respectively, whereas, Jakarta Composite and Nikkei 225 were up by 0.62 and 0.75 per cent respectively.
