Mid-Market—Sensex continues lacklustre trade in absence of global cues Analysis for Jan 01, 2014

The key Indian benchmark indices were continuing the lacklustre trade on first day of new-year amid absence of cues from global markets which are shut on account of the New Year holiday. The 30-share BSE Sensex was trading marginally higher, led by gains in ITC, Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors, Sun Pharma, among others. Broader markets were however outperforming with BSE"s Midcap and Smallcap indices trading higher by 0.5 per cent and 1 per cent, respectively.

At 12:31PM BSE SENSEX was at 21186.97 up by 16.29 points or by 0.08 per cent while NSE Nifty was at 6312 up by 8 points or by 0.13 per cent.

The BSE MIDCAP was at 6741.44 up by 35.88 points or by 0.54 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP was at 6625.64 up by 74.51 points or by 1.14 per cent.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 334.80,+1.32%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 292.50,+0.86%), Cipla Ltd. (Rs. 404.00,+0.86%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 2090.00,+0.73%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 343.30,+0.53%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 554.00,-0.90%), Tata Power Company Ltd. (Rs. 90.60,-0.82%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2157.35,-0.63%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 792.60,-0.46%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 3470.00,-0.44%), among others.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2325, shares advanced were 1431 while 765 shares declined and 129 were unchanged.

In BSE, BSE Realty index was at 1462.92 up by 29.51 points or by 2.06%. Godrej Industries Ltd. (Rs. 183.75,+10.79%), Indiabulls Real Estate Ltd. (Rs. 71.85,+4.36%), Sobha Developers Ltd. (Rs. 321.10,+3.20%), Housing Development & Infrastructure Ltd. (Rs. 55.05,+2.80%), DLF Ltd. (Rs. 170.10,+1.89%),.
