Nifty ends marginally lower on first day of 2014
It was an absolutely flat session of trade with the indices moving in an extremely tight range in trading for the 1st day of 2014. The Nifty which was up for most of the day, ended lower by 2.35 points at 6302 points.

Nifty stocks which ended the day with gains were Lupin, Sun Pharma, Hero Motor Corp and Gail. Real estate stocks were in the limelight with HDIL, DLF and Unitech among the gainers.

Jindal saw was among the top midcap gainers with the stock jumping almost 12 per cent, after investors began focussing their attention to mid cap stocks once again.

IT stocks witnessed some selling pressure in trade with notable losers being Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Wipro and HCL Tech.

FMCG and pharma stocks once again saw buying interest at lower levels with Asian Paints, Hindustan Unilever, Cipla and Ranbaxy among the gainers.

Adani Power had a good session in trade with the stock climbing after the company said that it had achieved record production at its Mundra Plant.

Lakhsmi Vilas Bank closed higher after the company said it would consider a right issue on Friday. Atul Auto gained 5 per cent after the company's december sales were up 23.42 per cent.

Meanwhile, markets in Asia and Europe were closed on account of the new year.
