The Sensex ended the day higher by 46 points, while the Nifty closed with gains of 8 points at a new record closing of 6704 points. Among the key losers in trade today were some of the banking names including the PSU banking stocks like Punjab National Bank and Bank of Baroda.
Heavyweight, ITC also lost ground.
Software stocks which opened the day weak managed to end the day with good gains. TCS and Infosys were among the software stocks which ended the day with gains.
Reliance Industries which will not revise gas prices with effect from April 1, ended the day with a spectacular rally. IDFC which has been rallying substantially on the hopes of a banking license ended the day with sharp losses and was the top Nifty loser in trade.
Auto stocks had a good day in trade with Mahindra and Mahindra and Maruti both ending the day with gains.
Mid cap stocks also had a good session in trade with notable winners being Jubilant Foodworks, Sun TV Netywork and Hindustan Zinc.
Bosch which reported a strike at one of its plants saw the stocks ending the day marginally higher.
Meanwhile, Asian markets ended the day higher with the Japanese Nikkei gaining almost 1 per cent, while the Straits Times was up 0.66 per cent.
