Sensex, Nifty take a breather; end lower on first day of F&O series

The Sensex and the Nifty took a breather today ending the day lower on the first day of the F&O series. The Sensex ended the day lower by 188 points, while the Nifty fell 58 points in trade to end below 6800 points at 6782.75 points.

The top Nifty loser in trade today was Cairn India after the company's Q4 numbers disappointed the street. Cement stocks also had a bad day with Ambuja Cements and ACC leading the losers from the cement pack.

Maruti Suzuki fell two per cent after the company's Q4 margins came lower than expected. Among the Nifty gainers in trade were Mahindra and Mahindra, Tech Mahindra and heavyweight, HDFC.

ITC and Hindustan Unilever fell on worries that a poor monsoon may affect sales in rural India. ICICI Bank also fell after its results disappointed the street.

Reports that NTT Docomo will sell its 26.5 per cent stake in Tata Teleservices via equity method saw the Tata Tele stock ending almost 11 per cent higher in trade.

Strides Arcolab rallied in trade after the company got a continued USFDA nod for oral dosage forms for manufacturing sites in Bangalore.

Select mid cap stocks saw some heavy selling pressure with MRF, Petronet LNG and Crompton Greaves among them.

Realty stocks were the stars in a falling market with DB Realty, India Bull and HDIL seeing buying interest.

Software stocks managed to show resilience in a falling market with Infosys and HCL Tech ending the day with modest gains.

Meanwhile, most of Asia ended the day with significant losses with the Taiwan Weighted, Singapore Strait Times and Seoul Composite seeing cuts of more than one per cent.
