Markets inch higher; auto, banks, oil & gas gain Analysis for Aug 21, 2014

Markets edged higher during the morning session of trade despite weak cues from the global peers. The 30-share benchmark index Sensex was up 76 points helped by gains in index heavyweights including Bajaj Auto, Gail, Axis Bank, Mahindra and Mahindra and ONGC among others. Tracking the momentum, the 50-share Nifty index was also trading in a narrow range, supported by gains in realty, oil & gas, IT and auto stocks.

At 10:21AM BSE SENSEX was at 26391.07 up by 76.78, points or by 0.29 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 7887.7, up by 12.4 points or by 0.16 per cent.

The BSE MIDCAP was at 9364.56, up by 88.22 points or by 0.95 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP was at 10361.7, up by 98.19 points or by 0.96 per cent.

The BSE Sensex touched an intraday high of 26407.92 and an intraday low of 26302.26, while the NSE Nifty touched an intraday high of 7894.5 and an intraday low of 7868.15.The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2239.40,+1.88%), State Bank of India (Rs. 2455.30,+1.75%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 435.40,+1.56%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 399.20,+1.31%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 428.25,+1.05%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 2851.50,-1.26%), Sesa Sterlite Ltd. (Rs. 291.90,-0.97%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 540.70,-0.87%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 841.00,-0.72%), Cipla Ltd. (Rs. 488.70,-0.65%), among others.

Among the sectors, In BSE, BSE_CDS index was at 9097.67 up by 283.55 points or by 3.22%. Titan Company Ltd. (Rs. 365.25,+5.49%), Bajaj Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 293.45,+3.16%), VIP Industries Ltd. (Rs. 103.50,+3.14%), Blue Star Ltd. (Rs. 335.00,+2.73%), Rajesh Exports Ltd. (Rs. 149.80,+1.94%),.

On the flip side, In BSE, BSE_HCS index was at 13103.71 down by -35.47 points or by -0.27%. Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 2851.50,-1.26%), Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd. (Rs. 1160.05,-1.21%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 841.00,-0.72%), Cipla Ltd. (Rs. 488.70,-0.65%), Lupin Ltd. (Rs. 1237.00,-0.62%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total 2234 shares traded, 1467 shares advanced, 681 shares declined while 86 remained unchanged.
