Sensex, Nifty end higher; PSU banking stocks recover
Energy stocks also displayed a strong trend with stocks like Cairn India and BPCL among the winners. The former rallied on reports of environmental clearance.
PSU banking stocks which were badly battered in the last few days on reports of bribery and scams, rallied on short covering. Union Bank of India gained a huge 7 per cent, while other stocks that gained were Punjab National Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce and Canara Bank.
Deepak Fertilizers ended the day higher after the Competition Commission approved the company's proposed additional stake buy in Vijay Mallya group firm Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers.
Mid cap stocks also saw buying interest with UPL and HCPL among the gainers. Realty stock were the weakest pack in trade with almost all of the stocks apart from Sobha Developers ending the day with losses.
Tata Motors ended the day higher on reports that the company plans to launch two vehicles every year till 2020 as the company looks to ramp up its product portfolio.
Meanwhile, markets across Europe were trading with gains, while most of Asia including the Japanese Nikkei ended higher.
