Post Session- Sensex ends flat amid mixed Asian cues Analysis for Aug 25, 2014

The key domestic benchmarks ended on a flat note, with a positive bias on Monday as the Sensex pared gains after hitting a fresh intra-day high after the Supreme Court ruled that all coal blocks allocations post 1992 were illegal, causing a sharp sell-off in metal stocks. Further, caution persisted ahead of the April-June quarter GDP data to be released this week, the expiry of August futures and options (F&O) contracts on Thursday and a holiday on account of Ganesh Chaturthi on Friday.

Asian stocks ended on a mixed note today as investors weighed the comments from US Federal Reserve Chairman Janet Yellen who stressed that there remained some slack in the American labour market but warned of an earlier than expected interest rate rise if progress continued to made at a rapid than anticipated rate. China"s Shanghai Composite fell amid concerns that a slowing economy is crimping corporate profits. Hang Seng rose but Japan"s Nikkei 225 rose as a weaker yen boosted the appeal of exporter stocks.

The BSE SENSEX closed at 26,437.02, up by 17.47 points or by 0.07 per cent and the NSE Nifty ended at 7,906.3, down by 6.9 points or by 0.09 per cent.

The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 26,630.74 and intraday low of 26,401.64 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 7,968.25 and intraday low of 7,897.95.

Meanwhile, the BSE MIDCAP closed at 9,281.58, down by 59.29 points or by 0.63 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP ended at 10,261.76, down by 36.76 points or by 0.36 per cent.

On the Sectoral front, FMCG and IT climbed 1.04 per cent and 0.92 per cent, respectively.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3246, shares advanced were 1474 while 1683 shares declined and 89 were unchanged.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2521.15,+2.42%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 719.10,+2.09%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 2884.00,+2.04%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 2578.65,+1.88%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 2802.40,+1.71%), among others.
