Mid-Session: Sensex up 50 points; IT stocks down Analysis for Oct 17, 2014

The markets continue to trade in the positive territory during the afternoon session, led by gains in capital goods Index followed by Consumer Durables, Power indices. Mahindra & Mahindra, Bharat Heavy Electricals, Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, State Bank of India were among the notable gainers. Disappointing earnings reported by IT majors TCS and HCL Technologies has offset encouraging earnings reported by Hero MotoCorp on the benchmark indices.

At 12:37 hours, the 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex was at 26053.19 up by 53.85 points or by 0.21 % and then NSE Nifty was at 7775.05 up by 26.85 points or by 0.35 %.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2645, shares advanced were 1136 while 1404 shares declined and 105 were unchanged.

The BSE MIDCAP was at 9255.41 up by 11.46 points or by 0.12 %, while the BSE SMLCAP was at 10302.03 down by -41.06 points or by -0.4 %.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1258.20,+3.23%), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 226.05,+3.17%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 397.10,+2.31%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 875.05,+1.85%), State Bank of India (Rs. 2510.40,+1.81%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2474.25,-7.64%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 139.75,-2.20%), Sesa Sterlite Ltd. (Rs. 234.15,-2.17%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 475.85,-1.64%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 2916.90,-0.76%), among others.

Among the thirteen sectoral front, BSE CGS index was at 14225.57 up by 241.74 points or by 1.73%. Alstom T&D India Ltd. (Rs. 351.00,+3.24%), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 226.05,+3.17%), Alstom India Ltd. (Rs. 480.05,+3.15%), Lakshmi Machine Works Ltd. (Rs. 3979.95,+2.08%), Fag Bearings India Ltd. (Rs. 2818.75,+1.97%),.
