Sensex, Nifty End Higher as Metal Stocks Lead Rally
The Sensex and the Nifty ended the day higher led by a gains in metal stocks and on the back of coal reforms initiated by the government. The Sensex ended the day with gains of 145 points, while the Nifty rallied 48 points in trade.
Leading the set of gainers from the Nifty were Bhel, Gail and Sesa Sterlite. All of these stocks ended the day higher by almost 4 per cent.
Other stocks that gained ground in trade were ICICI Bank and Hero Motor Corp. Nifty stocks that saw some reaction in trade were Mahindra and Mahindra and Sun Pharma.
Coal India on the other hand fell after the government announced new reforms for the sector. Shares in Punjab National Bank lost a huge 3 per cent after the bank's results lagged estimates. HDFC Bank on the other hand ended the day flat after its quarterly results matched expectations.
Mid cap stocks had a good session in trade with Arvind, Sail leading gainers on the index.
PSU banking stocks has a good session and ended the day higher, though shares of Punjab National Bank disappointed the markets.
Meanwhile, markets across Asia ended the day mostly lower, while Europe was trading with gains.
