Markets turn volatile; BSE IT index up 3% Analysis for Jan 09, 2015

The key domestic benchmark indices turned volatile during the late noon trading session post the announcement of Infosys"s Q3 numbers. The IT major has reported a net profit of Rs 3,250 crore for the third quarter ended December 31, 2014, up 4.9 per cent from Rs 3,096 crore in quarter ended September 30, 2014. The net profit rose 13 per cent on a year-on-year basis, as it won more outsourcing contracts from Western clients. Moreover, the company maintained its guidance of 7-9 per cent for the full year FY15, managing to beat street expectations on both net profit and US dollar guidance.

At 2:20PM BSE SENSEX was at 27331.68, up by 56.97 points or by 0.21 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 8220.3, down by 14.3 points or by 0.17 per cent.

The BSE MIDCAP was at 10396.15 down by 24.48 points or by 0.23 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP was at 11183.01 down by 2.87 points or by 0.03 per cent.

The BSE Sensex touched an intraday high of 27507.67 and an intraday low of 27119.63, while the NSE Nifty touched an intraday high of 8303.3 and an intraday low of 8190.8.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 853.00,+4.66%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 2055.00,+4.07%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 355.50,+4.07%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 3138.00,+2.37%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 440.10,+2.28%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2365.00,-3.47%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 140.10,-3.35%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 339.30,-2.29%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 354.20,-2.28%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 493.05,-1.79%), among others.

Among the sectors, In BSE, BSE_IT index was at 10666.23 up by 278.81 points or by 2.68%. Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 2055.00,+4.07%), MindTree Ltd. (Rs. 1246.00,+3.31%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 2651.45,+3.29%), Persistent Systems Ltd. (Rs. 1810.00,+2.93%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2489.40,+1.86%),.

On the flip side, In BSE, BSE Power index was at 2055.7 down by -24.26 points or by -1.17%. NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 140.10,-3.35%), Adani Power Ltd. (Rs. 44.70,-1.54%), Reliance Power Ltd. (Rs. 60.65,-1.38%), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 254.20,-1.32%), Reliance Infrastructure Ltd. (Rs. 482.00,-1.28%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total 3001 shares traded, 1262 shares advanced, 1613 shares declined while 126 remained unchanged.
