Mid-Session: Sensex losses nearly 76 points; CIL, HDFC weigh Analysis for Jan 29, 2015

Weighed down by selling pressure among select metal and financial sector stocks, the Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty have extended losses in the afternoon session on Thursday. The benchmark BSE Sensex trimmed early losses and declined nearly 76 points while the NSE Nifty fell over 26 points. The market sentiments were influenced as investors remained cautious ahead of the expiry of the January Futures & Options (F&O) contracts. On the global front, markets remained weak as the US Federal Reserve maintaining status quo on interest rates. Back home, the stocks of metal, public sector undertaking, TECk and infrastructure sectors saw profit-booking. Major show spoilers included were Coal India, Bharti Airtel, Housing Development Finance Corporation, ICICI Bank and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries.

At 12:20 hours, the 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex was at 29483.02 down by 76.16 points or by 0.26 per cent while the NSE Nifty was at 8888.2 down by 26.1 points or by 0.29 per cent.

The broader market was moving below baseline. The BSE MIDCAP was at 10806.99 down by 1.45 points or by 0.01 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP was at 11395.67 up by 26.56 points or by 0.23 per cent.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was positive. On BSE out of the total 2725 shares traded, 1305 advanced while 1296 shares declined and 124 remained unchanged.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 371.95,-3.15%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1314.95,-2.21%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 367.00,-1.81%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 377.25,-1.72%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 896.50,-1.41%), among others.

Meanwhile, Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 931.65,+2.85%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1081.20,+2.18%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 3308.00,+2.16%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 939.55,+0.77%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 421.75,+0.70%), were among notable gainers on BSE.

Among the thirteen sectoral indices on BSE, BSE Metal index was trading at 10175.9 down by 122.25 points or by 1.19 per cent. Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 371.95,-3.15%), Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 152.00,-1.94%), Sesa Sterlite Ltd. (Rs. 198.40,-1.20%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 386.85,-1.04%), JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 986.40,-0.64%), were among the notable losers on BSE.

Following the BSE Metal, BSE_PSU index was at 8344.43 down by 61.85 points or by 0.74 per cent. Oriental Bank of Commerce (Rs. 292.75,-6.47%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 371.95,-3.15%), Container Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 1383.50,-3.08%), Union Bank of India (Rs. 219.70,-3.00%), Allahabad Bank (Rs. 124.35,-2.28%), were among others.
