Post Session: Sensex ends lower for 5th day; ONGC dips over 3% Analysis for Feb 05, 2015

The Indian benchmarks ended lower for the fifth straight session on a trot as fall in crude oil prices and subdued cues weighed on market sentiments. However, strong buying among IT and Teck stocks countered losses in the power and realty stocks. Shares of oil and gas explorer ONGC fell over 3 per cent as oil resumed downtrend today.

On the global front, most of the Asian stocks ended lower. China"s Shanghai Composite fell amid concerns that a reduction in reserve requirement for lenders may be not be enough to spur a significant rebound in the world"s second biggest economy, Hang Seng rose and Japan"s Nikkei 225 closed lower as a stronger yen dimmed the appeal of exporter stocks.

The BSE SENSEX closed at 28850.97 down by 32.14 points or by 0.11 per cent and then NSE Nifty ended at 8711.7 down by 12 points or by 0.14 per cent.

In the choppy trade, the BSE Sensex touched an intraday high of 29277.83 and intraday low of 28753.29, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8838.45 and intraday low of 8683.65 during the day"s trade so far.

Meanwhile, the BSE MIDCAP closed at 10603.57 down by 137.81 points or by 1.28 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP settled at 11283.14 down by 149.26 points or by 1.31 per cent.

On the Sectoral front, power and realty stocks shed 2.8 per cent and 2.74 per cent, respectively.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3177, shares advanced were 1109 while 1934 shares declined and 134 were unchanged.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Power Company Ltd. (Rs. 83.45,-7.48%), Sesa Sterlite Ltd. (Rs. 207.80,-4.06%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 355.90,-3.38%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 147.80,-2.80%), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 277.50,-2.67%), among others.

On the flip side, Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 637.30,+3.18%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 2193.60,+2.41%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2551.90,+1.51%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1248.90,+1.28%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 566.45,+1.28%), were among top gainers.
