Post Session- Sensex falls ahead of Delhi polls Analysis for Feb 06, 2015

The key domestic benchmarks ended lower today as the Sensex retreated by 133 points led by losses in Auto and healthcare stocks amid worries that the Modi-led BJP may face a defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections this weekend, raising uncertainty over policy in Asia"s third biggest economy. Opinion polls predict an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) victory in the Delhi Assembly election. Caution persisted ahead of the key US January non-farm payrolls data to be unveiled today which may show that the world"s biggest economy added more than 200K jobs for a twelfth month on the trot. China"s Shanghai Composite and Hang Seng fell on concerns over a deepening slowdown in the world"s second biggest economy and that IPOs may draw capital from existing shares, but Japan"s Nikkei 225 rose led by an advance in lenders.

The BSE SENSEX closed at 28,717.91, down by 133.06 points or by 0.46 per cent and the NSE Nifty ended at 8,661.05, down by 50.65 points or by 0.58 per cent.

The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 28,922.85 and intraday low of 28,647.14 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8,726.2 and intraday low of 8,645.5.

Meanwhile, BSE MIDCAP closed at 10,490.68, down by 112.89 points or by 1.06 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP ended at 11,077.34, down by 205.8 points or by 1.82 per cent.

On the Sectoral front, Auto and Healthcare rose 2.77 per cent and 1.72 per cent respectively.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3138, shares advanced were 942 while 2081 shares declined and 115 were unchanged.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1279.50,+2.45%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 2229.35,+1.63%), Sesa Sterlite Ltd. (Rs. 210.60,+1.35%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 373.50,+1.32%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 367.55,+1.14%), among others.
