Sensex, Nifty extend gains; FMCG, Realty lend support Analysis for Feb 16, 2015

Indian equity markets extended gains and continued trading in green in the late afternoon session with the Sensex up 156 points supported by gains in index heavyweights including Mahindra and Mahindra, ITC, HDFC, Bharti Airtel, TCS and Tata Motors among others. The sentiments got some support after January wholesale price index inflation dropped to negative 0.39 percent from 0.11 percent in December. Food articles index was down 0.6 percent (M-o-M), while Fuel & Power group was down 2.5 percent (M-o-M). Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors bought equities worth Rs 390 crore on Friday, as per provisional stock exchange data.

At 2:27PM BSE SENSEX was at 29251.6, up by 156.67 points or by 0.54 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 8832.45, up by 26.95 points or by 0.31 per cent.

The BSE MIDCAP was at 10777.52, up by 36.57 points or by 0.34 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP was at 11265.84, up by 26.56 points or by 0.24 per cent.

The BSE Sensex touched an intraday high of 29325.35 and an intraday low of 29147.39, while the NSE Nifty touched an intraday high of 8870.1 and an intraday low of 8815.25.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were ITC Ltd. (Rs. 387.25,+2.43%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1221.00,+2.43%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1297.50,+2.29%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 362.00,+1.94%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2586.05,+1.87%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 916.60,-2.42%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 2810.60,-1.47%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 907.20,-1.09%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 340.20,-1.06%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 576.00,-0.87%), among others.

Among the sectors, In BSE, BSE_FMCG index was at 8544 up by 134.93 points or by 1.6%. Nestle India Ltd. (Rs. 7237.15,+2.87%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 387.25,+2.43%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 906.50,+1.54%), Jubilant Foodworks Ltd. (Rs. 1640.85,+1.31%), Colgate-Palmolive (India) Ltd. (Rs. 1924.30,+0.84%),.

On the flip side, In BSE, BSE Oil&Gas index was at 9984.35 down by -55.6 points or by -0.55%. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 603.45,-3.69%), Petronet LNG Ltd. (Rs. 184.10,-1.63%), Castrol India Ltd. (Rs. 488.45,-1.41%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 907.20,-1.09%), Cairn India Ltd. (Rs. 256.40,-0.52%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3029 , shares advanced were 1361 while 1537 shares declined and 131 were unchanged.
