Post Session: Sensex ends flat ahead of Feb F&O expiry Analysis for Feb 25, 2015

Ahead of February Future & Option expiry due tomorrow, the key domestic benchmarks ended on flat note today, paring most of its early gains. The investors turned cautious and remained sidelined ahead of rail budget tomorrow. Even, the broader markets witnessed surge in buying activities with both MIDCAP and SMLCAP up 0.3 per cent each. Shares of railways related stocks ended in red as investors booked profit. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government is slated to release Railway Budget, annual economic outlook survey and Union Budget due later during the week. On the setoral front, oil & gas rebounded for the first time, snapping two-day losing streak after reports of illegal information breach.

The BSE SENSEX closed flat at 29007.99 up by 3.33 points or by 0.01 per cent and then NSE Nifty ended at 8767.25 up by 5.15 points or by 0.06 per cent.

In the choppy trade today, the BSE Sensex touched an intraday high of 29269.83 and intraday low of 28967.61, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8840.65 and intraday low of 8751.4during the day"s trade so far.

Meanwhile, BSE MIDCAP closed lower at 10701.11 down by 23.59 points or by 0.22 per cent while the BSE SMLCAP settled at 11254.82 down by 45.29 points or by 0.4 per cent below the base line.

On the sectoral front, Teck and IT stocks emerged as top gainers, rising as much as 0.47 per cent and 0.45 per cent respectively.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3147, shares advanced were 1284 while 1731 shares declined and 132 were unchanged.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1341.00,+2.43%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 2318.05,+1.75%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 663.70,+1.71%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 347.80,+1.36%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 399.55,+0.93%), among others.

On the flip side, Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 351.15,-4.33%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 3274.95,-2.48%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 891.35,-2.00%), Tata Power Company Ltd. (Rs. 83.00,-1.83%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 900.90,-1.43%), were among top losers on BSE.
