Post-Session: Sensex ends lower; banking stocks dip Analysis for Mar 19, 2015

The Indian benchmarks closed on bearish note on account of profit booking in banks and RIL shares. Asian equities ended higher today taking cues from a strong rebound on Wall Street overnight as investors reacted to a dovish statement from the Federal Reserve. As markets watchdog Sebi plans a capacity augmentation of its fraud detection system, IT majors, including Wipro, HCL, Tech Mahindra and L&T Infotech, have evinced interest in bagging the contract. The BSE SENSEX closed at 28469.67 down by -152.45 points or by -0.53 per cent and then NSE Nifty closed at 8634.65 down by -51.25 points or by -0.59 per cent.

The BSE MIDCAP closed at 10786.17 down by -63.99 points or by -0.59 per cent. while the BSE SMLCAP closed at 11097.78 down by -64.39 points or by -0.58 per cent

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 390.05,+2.19 per cent), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 155.20,+1.50 per cent), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 336.35,+1.36 per cent), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2594.40,+1.32 per cent), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 312.15,+0.95 per cent), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 564.10,-2.50 per cent), State Bank of India (Rs. 281.55,-1.76 per cent), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 856.25,-1.44 per cent), Sesa Sterlite Ltd. (Rs. 191.40,-1.37 per cent), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 330.20,-1.33 per cent), among others.

The top gainers of the NSE Nifty pack were Lupin Ltd. (Rs. 1921.65,+2.58 per cent), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 834.80,+2.53 per cent), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 389.90,+2.13 per cent), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 336.60,+1.46 per cent), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2596.25,+1.44 per cent), among others.

The top losers of the NSE Nifty pack were Punjab National Bank (Rs. 161.95,-3.92 per cent), Bank of Baroda (Rs. 176.50,-3.16 per cent), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 563.55,-3.05 per cent), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 753.40,-2.47 per cent), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 881.15,-2.44 per cent), among others

Among the thirteen sectoral indices, banking index was leading the decline and closed at 21538.59 down by -386.26 points or by -1.76 per cent. Punjab National Bank (Rs. 161.95,-3.97 per cent), Bank of Baroda (Rs. 176.50,-3.29 per cent), Canara Bank (Rs. 390.50,-2.57 per cent), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 879.30,-2.55 per cent), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 564.10,-2.50 per cent)

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3061 , shares advanced were 1151 while 1780 shares declined and 130 were unchanged
