Sensex reels under pressure; NTPC, BHEL weigh Analysis for Mar 20, 2015

The key domestic benchmark indices continued to trade in red during the noon trading session on sustained weakness in power, pharmaceutical, auto and select bank stocks. The 30-share benchmark index was down by 158 points, while NSE Nifty fell 67 points. Market movement was muted mirroring sluggishness in the other regional bourses with no positive triggers on the domestic front to support. Also, the Indian rupee depreciated against the US dollar on fresh demand for the American currency from importers, after posting good gains in last couple of sessions. Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth Rs 1,428.72 crore yesterday, as per provisional data released by the stock exchanges.

At 1:16PM BSE SENSEX was at 28311.14, down by 158.53 points or by 0.56 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 8566.9, down by 67.75 points or by 0.78 per cent.

The BSE MIDCAP was at 10682.46, down by 103.71 points or by 0.96 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP was at 10919.23, down by 178.55 points or by 1.61 per cent.

The BSE Sensex touched an intraday high of 28484.36 and an intraday low of 28242.4, while the NSE Nifty touched an intraday high of 8627.9 and an intraday low of 8563.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 648.95,+2.46%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 2256.05,+1.17%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 133.05,+0.76%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2609.95,+0.60%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1334.80,+0.48%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 145.50,-6.25%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 378.05,-3.08%), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 247.50,-3.00%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 321.55,-2.62%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 902.15,-2.13%), among others.

Among the sectors, In BSE, BSE_IT index was at 11688.25 up by 87.87 points or by 0.76%. Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 648.65,+2.42%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 2258.80,+1.30%), MphasiS Ltd. (Rs. 388.20,+0.86%), CMC Ltd. (Rs. 1947.00,+0.72%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2609.95,+0.60%),.

On the flip side, In BSE, BSE Power index was at 2145.46 down by -39.69 points or by -1.82%. NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 145.50,-6.25%), Crompton Greaves Ltd. (Rs. 165.00,-3.54%), Reliance Infrastructure Ltd. (Rs. 440.00,-3.24%), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 248.00,-2.80%), Torrent Power Ltd. (Rs. 160.20,-2.38%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total 2826 shares traded, 694 shares advanced, 2019 shares declined while 113 remained unchanged.
