Mid-Session: Sensex edge lower in listless trade; broader market outperform Analysis for Apr 01, 2015

Weighed down by losses in the IT and Teck stocks, the Indian benchmarks stayed under stress in the afternoon session of day"s trade with Infosys, Maruti, BHEL, GAIL and TCS leading the decline. The market witnessed lackluster session in the holiday shorted last trading day of the week as investors stayed away from desk in lack of any major development on the domestic or global front. However, the broader markets both BSE midcap and smallcap were outperformed the front-liners with gains of around 0.8 per cent to 1.3 per cent respectively. The stocks of healthcare and FMCG sectors were leading the gains on BSE.

At 12:30 PM BSE SENSEX was at 27954.28 down by 3.21 points or by 0.01 per cent and then NSE Nifty was at 8483 down by 8 points or by 0.09 per cent.

Outperforming the benchmark indices, the broader market were trading higher with the BSE MIDCAP at 10676.19 up by 83.97 points or by 0.79 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP was at 11031.1 up by 140.65 points or by 1.29 per cent.

In the lackluster trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 28011.39 and intraday low of 27889.02, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8499.7 and intraday low of 8464.75.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1057.80,+3.48%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 400.50,+1.68%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 3542.90,+1.59%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 131.20,+1.59%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 881.70,+1.01%), among others.

On the flip side, Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 2166.40,-2.26%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 3620.20,-2.14%), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 231.40,-1.51%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 383.30,-1.43%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2525.50,-0.85%), were among top losers.

Among the thirteen sectoral indices, HCS index was top gainers and was trading at 17551.3 up by 266.36 points or by 1.54 per cent. Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (Rs. 1205.35,+3.83%), Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 842.90,+3.54%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1057.80,+3.48%), Aurobindo Pharma Ltd. (Rs. 1241.00,+1.70%), Cadila Healthcare Ltd. (Rs. 1768.40,+1.67%), were among top gainers.

Following the HCS index, BSE_FMCG index was at 7827.73 up by 54.29 points or by 0.7 per cent. Godrej Consumer Products Ltd. (Rs. 1074.95,+3.28%), Britannia Industries Ltd. (Rs. 2203.20,+2.07%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 881.70,+1.01%), Nestle India Ltd. (Rs. 7000.00,+0.84%), Dabur India Ltd. (Rs. 267.65,+0.83%), were among others supporting the market.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2525, shares advanced were 1677 while 738 shares declined and 110 were unchanged.
