Post-Session: Sensex gains over 200 pts; Nifty ends above 8,200 Analysis for Apr 28, 2015

The Indian benchmarks ended higher as the day clearly belonged to the auto and banking indices which surged by over 2 per cent each. However, the FMCG and IT indices shed about a per cent each. Auto stocks advanced on renewed buying interest. Maruti Suzuki hit lifetime high on strong Q4 performance. The markets surged in late trades to snap three-day losing streak, amid short-covering and renewed buying interest, with private banking major ICICI Bank and auto major Maruti Suzuki leading the gains. On the other hand, the selling pressure on the IT counters continued unabated following a spate of weak numbers posted by behemoths such as Infosys, TCS and Wipro. The BSE SENSEX closed at 27396.38 up by 219.39 points or by 0.81 per cent and then NSE Nifty closed at 8285.6 up by 71.8 points or by 0.87 per cent.

The BSE MIDCAP closed at 10368.47 up by 152.13 points or by 1.49 per cent. while the BSE SMLCAP closed at 10840.87 up by 146.06 points or by 1.37 per cent

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 326.65,+8.02 per cent), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 3826.65,+4.93 per cent), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 233.05,+2.76 per cent), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 529.85,+2.43 per cent), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 400.80,+2.26 per cent), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were ITC Ltd. (Rs. 337.50,-1.92 per cent), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 372.70,-1.32 per cent), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 1961.35,-1.24 per cent), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 865.00,-1.09 per cent), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 859.70,-0.89 per cent), among others.

The top gainers of the NSE Nifty pack were ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 326.85,+8.12 per cent), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 3822.60,+4.77 per cent), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 765.15,+4.49 per cent), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 608.60,+3.64 per cent), Idea Cellular Ltd. (Rs. 191.85,+3.28 per cent), among others.

The top losers of the NSE Nifty pack were ITC Ltd. (Rs. 337.55,-2.12 per cent), HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 870.50,-1.44 per cent), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 372.40,-1.39 per cent), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 1960.90,-1.20 per cent), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 865.20,-1.15 per cent), among others.

Among the thirteen sectoral indices, banking index was leading the rise and closed at 20890.63 up by 492.24 points or by 2.41 per cent. ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 326.65,+8.02 per cent), Federal Bank Ltd. (Rs. 127.30,+3.79 per cent), Bank of India (Rs. 215.30,+2.38 per cent), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 535.25,+2.08 per cent), State Bank of India (Rs. 272.40,+1.97 per cent),

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2821 , shares advanced were 1639 while 1081 shares declined and 101 were unchanged
