Post-Session: Sensex ends lower ahead of IIP, CPI data Analysis for May 12, 2015

The Indian benchmarks ended on a lower note amid weak global cues dragged by the losses in financials, metals and auto shares among others. Traders remained ahead of the release of IIP and CPI data while slow progress on land acquisition and GST bill added to the nervousness. All the 12 sectoral indices of BSE are trading lower. BSE Capital Goods, Power and Metal indices down nearly 3 per cent are the biggest losers followed by BSE Bankex and Oil & Gas indices down nearly 2.5 per cent each. Absence of a significant breakthrough in the talks between Greece and its creditors led to risk-aversion among traders and Asian stocks ended the day largely on a weak note. The BSE SENSEX closed at 26877.48 down by 629.82 points or by 2.29 per cent and then NSE Nifty closed at 8126.95 down by 198.3 points or by 2.38 per cent.

The BSE MIDCAP closed at 10274.08 down by 179.88 points or by 1.72 per cent. while the BSE SMLCAP closed at 10778.7 down by 188.92 points or by 1.72 per cent

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 3473.50,+3.31 per cent), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 2459.90,+3.18 per cent), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 353.15,-6.29 per cent), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 222.65,-5.07 per cent), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 218.40,-4.98 per cent), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 308.55,-4.59 per cent), Tata Power Company Ltd. (Rs. 71.50,-3.64 per cent), among others.

The top gainers of the NSE Nifty pack were Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 2466.40,+3.45 per cent), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 3468.90,+3.25 per cent), among others.

The top losers of the NSE Nifty pack were Bank of Baroda (Rs. 158.40,-6.66 per cent), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 353.60,-6.23 per cent), Cairn India Ltd. (Rs. 198.05,-5.67 per cent), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 222.60,-5.16 per cent), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 308.20,-4.73 per cent), among others.

Among the thirteen sectoral indices, realty index was leading the decline and closed at 1550.62 down by -52.9 points or by -3.3 per cent. Housing Development & Infrastructure Ltd. (Rs. 110.85,-7.43 per cent), Indiabulls Real Estate Ltd. (Rs. 55.20,-5.15 per cent), DLF Ltd. (Rs. 125.45,-3.69 per cent), Sobha Ltd. (Rs. 405.05,-3.16 per cent), Unitech Ltd. (Rs. 13.95,-3.13 per cent)

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2772 , shares advanced were 741 while 1934 shares declined and 97 were unchanged
