Post-Session: Sensex ends nearly 100 points lower Analysis for May 26, 2015

The Indian benchmarks closed on a dull note weighed down by Index heavyweights including Tata Motors, RIL and ITC. Weak quarterly earnings coupled with Greece fiscal woes also dampened the sentiments of the market participants. For the second straight day, the rupee depreciated against the dollar on Tuesday at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market on the back of increased demand for the American unit from importers. TC has extended yesterday's fall. The company's March quarter results that were announced post market hours on Friday came in lower than expectations. GAIL announced after market hours yesterday that as a first step to usher in commencement of project work on the first phase of Jagdishpur-Haldia Pipeline, Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Petroleum and Natural Gas inaugurated the project office in Patna yesterday. The BSE SENSEX closed at 27531.41, down by 112.47 points or by 0.41 per cent and then NSE Nifty was at 8339.35, down by 30.9 points or by 0.37 per cent.

The BSE MIDCAP was at 10609.96, down by 1.15 points or by 0.01 per cent while the BSE SMLCAP was at 11165.65, down by 17.73 points or by 0.16 per cent.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 241.00,+2.88 per cent), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 374.95,+1.41 per cent), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 2619.00,+1.24 per cent), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 3727.00,+0.96 per cent), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2324.00,+0.96 per cent), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 195.35,-2.33 per cent), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 322.55,-2.05 per cent), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 497.10,-1.60 per cent), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 132.60,-1.34 per cent), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 3546.55,-1.07 per cent), among others.

The top gainers of the NSE Nifty pack were Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 241.45,+3.12 per cent), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 375.00,+1.38 per cent), Bank of Baroda (Rs. 159.45,+1.05 per cent), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 2613.85,+0.99 per cent), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2321.30,+0.98 per cent), among others.

The top losers of the NSE Nifty pack were Ambuja Cements Ltd. (Rs. 226.80,-2.37 per cent), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 195.10,-2.16 per cent), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 322.50,-2.14 per cent), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 497.60,-1.52 per cent), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 132.50,-1.30 per cent), among others.

Among the thirteen sectoral indices, oil & gas index was leading the decline and closed at 9411.26, down by 97.75 points or by 1.03 per cent led by Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 322.55,-2.05 per cent), Petronet LNG Ltd. (Rs. 183.00,-1.77 per cent), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 782.05,-1.34 per cent), Cairn India Ltd. (Rs. 192.30,-1.21 per cent), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 884.65,-1.07 per cent).

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE, out of total shares traded 2759, shares advanced were 1155 while 1484 shares declined and 120 were unchanged.
