Sensex, Nifty End Lower; Greece Debt Repayment Weighs

Benchmark indices ended the day lower as European markets fell following worries that Greece was edging closer to a default.

The Sensex closed the day lower by 112 points to end the day at 27,531 points, falling for the second day in a row after Monday's big slide of more than 300 points.

Heavyweights, ITC and HDFC led the fall and declines in stocks like Infosys also weighed on the index.

Tata Motors was the biggest loser in trade on worries that the results to be declared later today may not meet expectations.

Stocks that gained ground were Gail, Coal India and Hero Motor Corp. Nestle which fell a huge 5 per cent in trade on worries over the likely ban on Maggie recovered towards the end of trade and was down only one per cent.

Tech Mahindra was also weak ahead of results to be declared later today. VRL Logistics was up three per cent after the company reported a good set of results.

Banking stocks were mostly lower with ICICI Bank, State Bank of India and Canara Bank among the losers.

Pharma stocks also had a bad day in trade with Lupin and Sun Pharma among the losers. Meanwhile, Asian markets, particularly the Shanghai Composite and the Hang Sang closed with solid gains. European markets were mostly lower weighed down by Greece.
