Cancelling Indian Railways Confirmed Ticket: Know The Charges

It may be a case that your travelling plan via Indian railways needs to be cancelled due to some exigency and for the same IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) provides a facility to cancel confirmed tickets online if tickets had been booked through the online mode via the official website irctc.co.in or its app. After the user places the request for cancellation of confirmed tickets, IRCTC forwards the claim request to the concerned department of the Indian Railways, which upon due verification processes the refund into the same account using which the ticket was booked.

 Cancelling Indian Railways Confirmed Ticket: Know The Charges

It is to be noted that there are some cancellation or penalty charges for cancelling a confirmed ticket with the railways which the user has to bear depending on the class and timing of cancellation.

For cancelling railway tickets booked physically, one needs to visit the passenger reservation system or PRS counters at railway stations.

Cancellation charges on confirmed railway tickets under different circumstances:

1. In case the confirmed railway ticket is cancelled more than 48 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, for AC first and executive class, flat fee of Rs. 240 is deducted as cancellation charges. For AC 2-Tier or first class, Rs. 200 is charged while for AC 3 tier/AC chair car/ AC 3 Economy, a sum of Rs. 180 is deducted. For sleeper and second class, cancellation charges in respect of confirmed ticket are Rs. 120 and Rs. 60 per passenger, respectively.

2. If the cancellation of the confirmed ticket is being made within 48 hours and up to 12 hours before the actual scheduled departure of the train, a cancellation fee of 25% of the fare is charged subject to the minimum rate specified by the Indian railways.

3. If the ticket is being cancelled when there is just less than 12 hours or up to four hours left for the actual departure of the train upto chart preparation, whichever is early, a maximum of 50% of the fare is refunded to the user's account depending on the minimum cancellation charges.
