Banking customers across India will need to plan their branch visits carefully this month, with the Reserve Bank of India's bank holiday calendar showing banks closed for a total of 14 days in August 2026.
The closures include the usual weekend holidays, along with a mix of national and region-specific festivals that vary depending on the state. While physical branches will be shut on these dates, digital banking services such as UPI, net banking, mobile banking, and ATMs are expected to keep functioning as usual.
According to the calendar, banks will be closed on the the following days:
August 2, Sunday
August 4, Ker Puja, observed in Tripura
August 8, Saturday,
August 9, Sunday,
August 13, Patriots' Day, observed in Manipur
August 15, Independence Day
August 16, Sunday
August 19, birth anniversary of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, observed in Tripura
August 22, fourth Saturday
August 23,Sunday
August 25, Milad-un-Nabi and First Onam, observed in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh
August 26, Id-e-Milad and Thiruvonam, observed across several states including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi NCR, Bihar and Kerala
August 28, Raksha Bandhan/Sree Narayana Guru Jayanti, observed in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and other states
August 30, Sunday
Independence Day Falls On A Weekday This Year
Unlike the stock market, which gets no separate holiday for Independence Day since August 15 falls on a Saturday, banks will observe a nationwide holiday on that date regardless, as it is a gazetted public holiday under the RBI's calendar.
Online Services To Be Active
Even on days when branch operations are suspended, RTGS, NEFT, IMPS, UPI and other digital payment rails continue to function, since these systems run independently of branch hours in most cases. Customers needing cheque clearance, passbook updates, or other services that require in-person banking should plan around the dates above, particularly if they fall in a state with additional regional holidays layered on top of the national calendar.
