ChatGPT Down Today? Users Report Login, Chat History & Prompt Issues Across India, US; OpenAI Investigating

One of the most common problems reported during the disruption was the inability to sign in to ChatGPT. While some users were unexpectedly logged out of their accounts, others encountered repeated authentication failures when attempting to access the platform.

Several users also reported difficulties while submitting prompts. In many cases, requests either failed to process, generated service error messages or remained stuck without producing a response.

Another major issue involved missing conversation history. Users said earlier chats failed to load, with some seeing blank screens or continuous loading indicators instead of their saved conversations. Since many people use ChatGPT to store drafts, research notes, coding discussions and project-related work, the temporary disappearance of chat history caused significant inconvenience.

OpenAI Confirms Issue, Says Investigation Is Underway

OpenAI acknowledged the disruption through its official status page, confirming that it was investigating issues affecting multiple services.

Although the company recognised the incident, it did not immediately disclose the underlying cause of the outage or provide an estimated timeline for full restoration. At the time of the update, OpenAI had only stated that its engineering teams were examining the problem.

During platform-wide disruptions, different services can recover at different speeds. As a result, some users may be able to open ChatGPT while still facing problems with authentication, conversation history or prompt generation.

Users also observed that the platform's status page appeared to alternate between showing an active incident and normal service, suggesting that recovery efforts were progressing in stages while intermittent issues continued.

ChatGPT Outage Disrupts Several Workflows

The latest disruption underlines a wider issue for companies adopting generative AI in regular workflows. ChatGPT is often used for drafting emails, summarising documents, preparing spreadsheets, writing code, analysing text and supporting customer service teams. When access fails, employees may be forced to return to manual processes or shift work to other tools.

For businesses in India, the timing of such outages can be especially inconvenient because ChatGPT is used across technology, education, finance, marketing and start-up teams. Many users do not maintain formal backups of prompts, research chains or generated drafts. If chat history becomes temporarily unavailable, work continuity can be affected.

While consumer apps can tolerate occasional downtime, business users expect clear status updates, recovery timelines and transparency after repeated disruptions. The incident comes soon after another major disruption that affected ChatGPT, Codex and OpenAI's API services. That earlier outage reportedly took nearly 24 hours to fully resolve. A second disruption in a short span has led some users to question recent platform stability, especially as AI tools become embedded in work and study routines.
