Mumbai Rains: Yellow Alert In Mumbai, Thane On July 24; School Holiday In Palghar; 100+ Trains Cancelled

Mumbai Rains Today

Over the past 24 hours till 8:30 am of Thursday, IMD reported that Santacruz recorded 63.6 mm of rainfall, while Colaba witnessed 22.2 mm of rainfall. Additionally, Navi Mumbai posted 56.87 mm of rainfall, but Thane saw a whopping 99.32 mm of rainfall.

For July 24th, IMD issued a yellow alert

For today and tomorrow, IMD predicts generally cloudy sky with moderate to heavy rainfall at a few places in Mumbai and suburbs. Possibility of very heavy rainfall accompanied with gusty winds reaching 60-70 Kmph at isolated places.

Palghar Rains

The red alert yesterday had left Palghar flooded. The district saw flash floods, triggering widespread disruption to properties, lands, and thousands of normal lives. As per reports, two consecutive days of torrential rains from July 22nd to July 23rd led to flash flooding in Dahanu and Talasari talukas, causing road, rail, and traffic disruptions. But also leaving over 1 lakh people cut from the rest of the district. Further, National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) teams were deployed to rescue citizens in flood-prone areas after Kurje, Dhamni, and Kawdas dams started to overflow.

Palghar faced the heaviest rainfall, in triple digits to 254 mm, followed by Wada with 166 mm of rainfall, and Vasai with 102 mm rain. Jawhar topped them with 274 mm of rainfall.

Among other regions, Agashi or Virar West saw 123 mm of rains, Bolinj or Virar witnessed 104 mm of rains, Kaman saw 101 mm of rains, Vasai west or Manikpur saw 98 mm of rains, while Mandvi or Vasai East (Pelhar) saw 74 mm and 70 mm of rainfall, respectively, yesterday. These are Vasai talukas.

Following the intensity of the rain yesterday, the seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai filled to its 70% capacity. Modak Sagar is now the fourth lake to start overflowing from July 23rd after reaching its full supply level.

Mumbai Rains: Are Schools Closed?

Palghar has announced that schools and colleges will remain close on Friday, July 24, as well. As per the notification, students are not required to attend the education institutions on Friday, but headmasters, teachers, and non-teaching employees are asked to be present to complete their regular office hours and undertake disaster management duties.

However, this direction is excluded for schools in Vasai-Vihar city. Hence, students and parents in these areas should check with the school for updates.

Unlike Palghar, schools and colleges will be open for students, teachers and non-teacher employees in Mumbai and Thane.

Mumbai Rains: 100+ Trains Cancelled

Western Railway has cancelled over 100 train services on the vital Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor on Friday. Heavy rainfall has led to critical water levels near several major bridges. Authorities are closely monitoring the Umargam-Gholvad and Udvada-Vapi stretches for safety. This massive disruption affects both daily commuters and long-distance travelers moving between these hubs, as per Native Planet report.
