The deadline for filing the income tax return is almost here and if you have not filed your ITR yet its high time that you do it since July 31, 2026 is the final date for salaried individuals and other non-audit taxpayers to file their income tax return for Fiscal Year 2025-26 and Assessment Year 2026-27.
Those taxpayers whose accounts require an audit have a separate later deadline, but for most of the regular tax filers, the time is running out.
If you miss this date, it doesn't mean you will not get another chance to file but it will be possible only after paying a penalty and possibly losing out on certain benefits.
ITR Filing Delay: What The Penalty Actually Costs You
Under Section 234F of the Income Tax Act, returns filed after July 31 but before December 31, 2026 attract a late fee of up to Rs. 5,000.
The amount depends on income level; taxpayers with total income above Rs. 5 lakh pay the full Rs. 5,000, while those with income up to Rs. 5 lakh pay a reduced Rs. 1,000.
On top of the late fee, Section 234A adds interest at 1% per month or part of a month on any unpaid tax amount, calculated from August 1 until the date you actually file.
How To File Your ITR Before The Deadline: A Step-By-Step Guide
If you are unaware of how to file your ITR, here is a quick step-by-step guide for you:
Step 1: Log in to the e-filing portal at incometax.gov.in using your PAN as the user ID.
Step 2: Once logged in, go to the 'e-File' menu, select 'Income Tax Returns' and then 'File Income Tax Return.'
Step 3: Choose the correct assessment year, which is AY 2026-27
Step 4: Next select your filing status, typically 'Individual.'
Step 5: Pick the ITR form that matches your income sources, so salaried taxpayers with straightforward income usually file ITR-1, while those with capital gains or multiple income streams may need ITR-2 or ITR-3.
Step 6: The income tax portal mostly fills part of your return using data from your Form 16, Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement AIS, so it's worth cross-checking these against your own records before proceeding.
Step 7: Fill in or verify details of your income, deductions under sections like 80C and 80D, and any taxes already paid.
Step 8: Once the form is complete, the portal calculates your final tax liability or refund.
Step 9: Submit the return and complete the process by verifying it using Aadhaar OTP or net banking.
Step 10: It should be noted that any unverified return is treated as not filed at all, so this last step is very important while carrying out the process.
What Happens If You Still Miss It
If July 31 passes without a filed return, you can still submit a belated return any time up to December 31, 2026, but the Section 234F penalty and 234A interest will apply from the point of filing.
