In April, the government of Maharashtra has declared holidays on April 1, on account of the Annual Closing of accounts of Commercial and Co-operative Banks; April 10, on account of Id-ul-Fitr; and April 14, on account of Dr Ambedkar Jayanti/Vishu.

Eid-al-Fitr is a Muslim festival. The festival is celebrated with great pomp and enthusiasm by people all around the world. Muslims observe fast from early morning till sunset. They break the fast after sighting the moon during evening time post sunset. During this time Muslims perform formal prayers known as Salah five times per day. During Ramzan, there will be an extra Salah known as Tarawih during nighttime. In the evening after sighting the moon, Muslims will break their fast by eating dates along with water juice or buttermilk.

Except for gazetted holidays, banks are not the same across all the states in India. If Banks in Maharashtra are closed on one particular day it does not mean banks are also closed in other parts of the country.

All the banks including ICICI Bank, DCB Bank, Federal Bank and Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Limited will remain closed on the bank holidays in Maharashtra.

Bank Holidays in Maharashtra during April

Apart from regular holidays, two regional bank holidays that will be observed in Maharashtra in April 2024 include:
April 1 - Annual Closing of Accounts of Commercial and Co-operative Banks
April 9- Chetichand
April 10 - Id-ul-Fitr
April 14 - Dr Ambedkar Jayanti/Vishu.
April 17 - Ram Navami
April -21 - Mahavir Jayanti

The second week and the fourth week of Saturdays are declared as Bank Holidays.

It is a Central government holiday. All the nationalized banks, and public and private sector banks remain closed on those two days across the country.

Thus, if banks in other states are open on a certain date in the month of April, it is not necessary that banks in Maharashtra will also remain open on that day. During these bank holidays in Maharashtra, the banks are closed. As per an understanding between the Indian Banks' Association and All India Bank Employees Association, all public sector banks in Maharashtra and other states of India are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.

In Maharashtra, bank holidays do not mean people will not have access to net banking facilities. Even when banks are closed people can conduct financial transactions via online mode.

Annual Closing of Bank Accounts: The RBI has directed all the banks in India to remain closed on this day under the Negotiable Instruments Act. An accounting procedure will be undertaken at the end of the year to close out the accounts from the previous year, carry forward the balances of the prior year and open posting accounts for the next upcoming year. All the nationalized banks, public sector banks, private banks and cooperative banks will remain closed on this day.

Mahaveer Jayanthi: The government has declared a holiday on Mahaveer Jayanthi to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Mahaveer, the twenty-fourth Tirthankara of Jainism. On this day, Jains in India celebrate the festival with much pomp and enthusiasm.

Id-ul-Fitr: It marks the end of the holy month of Ramzan. It is a Muslim festival, celebrated with joy and religious fervour across the country. People wake up early in the morning and dress up in new clothes on this day. They visit mosques and participate in prayers.

They joyfully greet each other with hugs by saying “Eid Mubarak.” The festival marks the culmination of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan which Muslims observe fasting from dawn to dusk. They do not even consume water during fasting time. On this day unique dishes and sweets will be prepared to add more zeal to the festivities.
