Apart from regular bank holidays i..e Sundays and second and fourth Saturdays, banks in Meghalaya will also remain closed on January 1, January 12 and January 26 on account of New Year's Day, Birthday of Swami Vivekananda and Republic Day. Republic Day: It is a National Festival. The main celebrations take place in Red Fort, Delhi. Apart from this all the state governments also celebrate the event with good spirits by organizing several cultural activities. The day marks the adoption of the Constitution of India to govern the country replacing the previously followed Government of India Act of 1935. India adopted the Constitution on November 26, 1949, and the same came into effect starting from January 26, 1950, and hence Republic Day is observed on January 26 on an annual basis. The Governor of the state hoists the tricolor flag on this day. Several gallantry awards will be honored to the policemen and brave hearts for their courageous acts on this day.
Many youth and school children will perform cultural activities to mark the event. Renowned musicians will pay tribute to the nation through their performances which will be attended by a huge gathering on this day.
