In June, there is no regional holiday in Kerala and as such except for one national holiday and regular bank holidays including Sundays and Second and Fourth Saturdays, banks will function as normal in the state. Banks in Kerala will remain closed for more than six days in the state in June 2024.
Date & Month | Day | Holiday |
---|---|---|
June 8 | Saturday | Second Saturday Bank Holiday |
June 17 | Monday | Bakrid / Eid al Adha |
June 22 | Saturday | Fourth Saturday Bank Holiday |
Except for gazetted holidays, banks are not the same across all the states in India. State-specific bank holidays in Kerala include Onam and Vishu. If Banks in Kerala are closed on the occasion of Onam it does not mean banks are also closed in other parts of the country.
All the banks including Karnataka Bank, Federal Bank, Jammu & Kashmir Bank, and Lakshmi Vilas Bank will remain closed on the bank holidays.
Champakkulam Moolam Vallamkali: It is a boat race popularly known as ‘Moolam Vallamkali’ held in the waters of the Champakkulam river at Champakulam, which is about 26 km from Alappuzha. Moolam means a Malayalam asterism of the month of Mithunam. The boat race is held in reminiscence of the installation of the idol of Lord Krishna in Amabalapuzha Sree Krishnaswamy Temple. The banks will function normally on this day.
Bakrid: Eid–ul-Adha is also called as Bakrid. The day is celebrated to honour Prophet Abraham. It is believed that Abraham was a great devotee of God and he was tested for the same. He was asked to sacrifice his only son. Abraham or Ibrahim followed the command of God and was ready to sacrifice his son. Later, God intervened and during the act, a lamb was sacrificed instead of Ibrahim’s son. The day is marked by sacrificing an animal or lamb and is divided into three parts. One share is kept for the family and the remaining will be shared with the poor and needy people.
In the month of June, banks will remain closed for seven days. The days when banks will remain closed in Kerala include:
June 9 - Sunday
June 15 - Saturday
June 16- Sunday
June 17 - Monday (Id-ul-Ad’ha (Bakrid)
June 23 - Sunday
June 29 - Saturday
June 30 - Sunday
Apart from regional holidays, Kerala has regional holidays. Thus, if banks in other states are open on a certain date it is not necessary that banks in Kerala will also remain open on that day. During these bank holidays in Kerala, the banks are closed. As per an understanding between the Indian Banks' Association and All India Bank Employees Association, all public sector banks in Kerala and other states of India are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.
The tourist hotspots in Kerala that you can consider visiting on a bank holiday include Goa, Cochin, Munnar, and Alapuzha Backwaters.
In Kerala, bank holidays do not mean people will not have access to net banking facilities. Even when banks are closed people can conduct financial transactions via online mode.
