Bank Holidays in October 2024 in West Bengal

In October, the West Bengal government have proudly announced for 2024, a total of seven holidays apart form the four Sundays. Bank holidays for the month are declared on October 2nd, on account of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti; October 10th, on account of Maha Saptami; October 11th, on account of Maha Ashtami; October 12th, on account of Maha Navami and the second week of Saturday as bank holiday; October 13th, on account of Vijaya Dashami; October 17th, on account of Laxmi Pooja and October 26, the fourth week of Saturday as Bank Holiday in West Bengal for 2024.

Bank Holidays in West Bengal during October

All the banks in West Bengal will remain closed on the above-mentioned days. The banks will not perform the usual functioning these days. All the banks including Canara Bank, State Bank of India, Allahabad Bank, and Andhra Bank will remain closed during the bank holidays in West Bengal in October 2024.

Mahalaya or Maha Saptami: Pitru Paksha masa falls during the month of Bhadrapada. During this period, the sun will be in the Virgo zodiac sign and in conjunction with the moon. The period is very auspicious to offer oblations to the departed ancestors. The whole fortnight is called pitri paksha (the fortnight preceding Amavasya is considered sacred for propitiating departed souls). Many people visit rivers like Ganga, Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri to offer oblations and pindas to their ancestors.

Durga Ashtami or Maha Asthami: It is a Hindu festival. The Durga Puja is celebrated especially in the state of West Bengal. This festival is a part of 9 days long Navarathri festival which is celebrated widely across the country. It marks the eighth day of the festival. The day marks its significance because the moment the eighth day is completed and the beginning of the ninth day is considered the moment when goddess Durga kills the buffalo demon – Mahishasur, which marks the trump of good over evil.

Maha Navami: It is a Hindu festival which is the final day of the Navratri celebrations. It is a nine-day period celebration of Goddess Durga. During the ninth day of Navratri, the goddess is worshipped as Durga and offered sugarcane stalks. Kanya puja is practised on this day. In Kanya Puja, nine young girls (who have not attained puberty) will be invited to houses and are feasted with a delicious spread of food. Nine young girls are treated as nine forms of the goddess and are honoured by washing their feet and putting tilak on their foreheads. They are further presented with certain gifts in the form of clothes, fruits, sweets and so on, which people can be a part of celebration by visiting some of the best places in Uttar Pradesh during bank holidays in Uttar Pradesh.

Vijaya Dashami: It is a Hindu festival. This is the last day of the Navaratri festival, which is celebrated for a period of nine nights. During these nine -days, people celebrate the festival by showcasing a wonderful collection of dolls which will be arranged in a particular order and it is called Bommala Koluvu. The day marks the victory of good over evil because it is on this day, the goddess Durga kills the demon King Mahishasura. During the Navratri festival, Sreevari Brahmotsavam will be held in the abode of Lord Venkateshwara at Tirumala. It starts on the second day after Mahalaya Amavasya and it ends on the Vijaya Dasami day.
