New CPI inflation at 7.65%

India's consumer price inflation for January 2012 has come in at 7.65%. The annual consumer price index (CPI) data has been released for the very first time and includes diverse categories like food groups, fuel, clothing, housing and education across rural and urban India.
All along, India has been using the wholesale price index, unlike countries abroad, which tend to use the consumer price index.
According to a press release issued the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India, Provisional annual inflation rate based on all India general CPI
(Combined) for January 2012 on point to point basis (January 2012 over January
2011) was 7.65%.
The corresponding inflation rates for rural and urban areas are 7.38% and 8.25% respectively.
