Turkmenistan presses for TAPI gas pipeline

By Religare

Turkmenistan is going ahead with its plans to construct a pipeline to transport its gas through Afghanistan to India and Pakistan, despite concerns about the viability of the project.

The project known as TAPI (Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India) natural gas pipeline is viewed with a degree of suspicion even though it is backed by Asian Development Bank (ADB).

It is said that with the construction of the pipeline, Turkmenistan will be able to increase the exports of its gas.

Sakhatmurad Mamedov, head of the state-owned company Turkmengaz said, "The realisation of the TAPI project will give an impulse to the development of the countries taking part in the project and will also strengthen stability in the region as well as creating new jobs."
