Bharti Airtel loses Myanmar license bid to Telenor, and Qatar's Ooredoo

Country's leading telecom operator Bharti Airtel on Thursday lost two telecom licences in Myanmar, one of the last untapped mobile phone markets globally, to Norwegian firm Telenor and Qatar Telecommunications.

The government committee in charge of licence bids "is pleased to announce that Telenor Mobile Communications and Ooredoo (Qatar Telecom) have been selected as the two successful applicants", a Myanmarese government statement said.

The committee also picked a consortium of France Telecom-Orange and Marubeni as a back-up company, in case one of the two companies isn't able to meet post-selection requirements, it said.


In the hotly-contested Myanmar licences, as much as 91 entities participated in the bid and 12 including Airtel, Vodafone, SingTel, Telecom-Orange and Marubeni Corporation were shortlisted.

Bharti Airtel, the only Indian bidder among 11-shortlisted for mobile licences, had submitted its final bid on June 4.
