Sensex, Nifty end the day flat; infra stocks continue to rally
The Sensex and the Nifty ended the day flat in a session that was largely rangebound for most of the trading day.

The Sensex ended the day with a small loss of 6 points, while the Nifty lost 1 points to end at 6816 points. Among the top Nifty gainers in trade today were the oil and gas stocks including Reliance, BPCL, ONGC and Gas Authority of India.

In fact, Reliance and BPCL hit 52-week highs in trade today. HDFC Bank which reported its Q4 numbers today ended the day higher after the results were largely in line with estimates. Sesa Sterlite was the top Nifty loser in trade after the stock rallied substantially on Monday following the Supreme Court decision to lift the ban on iron ore mining in Karnataka.

Infra and construction stocks were in the limelight with IRB, NCC and Larsen and Toubro among the gainers in trade. Banking stocks had a mixed trading session with private sector banking stocks ending the day higher, while PSU banking stocks like Punjab National Bank and Union Bank of India lost ground.

Mid cap stocks also ended the with gains with India Cements, Unitech and Petronet LNG being among the winners from the space. Shares in Wipro which fell as much as seven per cent on Monday, lost another three per cent in trade today.

Meanwhile, most of the Asian markets ended the day higher with the Singapore Strait Times and the Seoul Composite among the winners.
